Direct Support Professional Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Direct Support Professionals work with individuals and/or small groups of Developmentally Disabled (DD) and/ or Intellectual Disabilities (DI) individuals.
  • Provide instruction, supervision and direct assistance in facilitating services as outlined in individual's Staff Action Plan.
  • Provide training and supervision in various activity of daily living, including: self- help, communications, interpersonal relations, leisure activities, etc.
  • Provide administrative assistance to designated Team Leader.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the development of the individual's Staff Action Plan, Safeguards and in meeting that the objectives are in their plan of services.
  • Assistance may be required in the following areas: cleaning, preparing snacks social skills, budgeting, reading, math, computer skills, self-advocacy skills, volunteering, recreational and physical fitness activities.
  • Staff may need to provide hands on demonstration, modeling, prompting, and instruction in the use of these (and other) skills.
  • Completes all required Services billing documentation in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Submit daily service notes accurately and contemporaneously.
  • Report and document all incidents.
  • Insures that individuals' goals are person centered and promote independence, inclusion and/or integration into the community.
  • Responsible for community outreach, obtaining and maintaining volunteer site
  • and activities opportunities.
  • Assist program supervisor/ TL in needed/ requested programmatic areas such as, reports, documentation, compliance, etc.
  • (Other duties may be assigned with or without prior notice).

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide direct support services in any of Home and Day Service programs (Day
  • Habilitation, Supplemental Day Habilitation, Community Habilitation, Supported
  • Employment, Pre-Vocational, Pathways to Employment, In Home Respite, etc.)
  • Responsible for maintaining all required OPWDD and HOTW trainings.
  • Assist the individual to explore and develop experiences that provide them with a good quality of life by planning and implementing a daily activity schedule.
  • Follow the 3 IP philosophy (INDEPENDENCE, INCLUSION, INDIVIDUALIZATION, and PRODUCTIVITY).
  • In the event of an emergency, provide supervision coverage even if you were not originally scheduled to do so; this may require you to work overtime. Act as a professional role model for the individual; maintain a professional manner at all times.
  • Comply with OPWDD and HOTW policies and procedures.
  • Comply with Help On The Way corporate compliance, OMIG compliance requirement, confidentiality and HIPAA rules.
  • Demonstrate the flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes in job duties when the agency and program's needs arise or change.
  • Attends and participates in all in-service training.
  • Assists the individuals with all transportation needs (agency vehicles and public transportation).
  • Using program vehicles, public transportation or taxi, assists in transporting program participants anywhere in the community as needed.
  • Performs any other duties deemed necessary by the Supervisor of the Home and
  • Day Services Department and/or Executive Director.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or
  • Associate's degree in a health and human service field or 60 credits in a bachelor's program in a health and human service field and One year experience in service plan development for any population, or One year experience in working with a population with developmental disabilities, or

Language Skills

Written and reading fluency in English. Ability to read, and interpret documents such as medical reports, assessments, etc. Ability to write routine reports and correspondences. Ability to speak effectively with service providers, colleagues and families.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
  • situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or scheduled form.
  • Also attends all required trainings and other meetings deemed necessary by supervisor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 20 pounds.
